When setting places at the table you should plan to leave at least 24 inches per place setting. This will give each person enough room to comfortably sit, without having to worry about their elbows bumping into one another. Ideally you should allow for 30 inches per place setting, as this will ensure the optimum amount of space, without making each guest feel isolated.

The tables apron is the piece of molding which hangs down around the edge of the piece, blocking the under mount from view. If your table has a low apron it can be uncomfortable for guests, and can make it difficult for them to cross their legs. One way to compensate for this is to size the height of your dining chairs with this in mind.

When choosing chairs for your table, ensure that the arms of these pieces can be easily slid underneath the table, rather than bumping into the apron. This will allow you to make the setting look complete and organized when it is not being used, and will help to save space.

There should be at least 24 inches of empty space behind each chair when a person is seated at the table. Any less and you can run into a problem when people try to pass around or behind the table at a meal.

If you use various seating pieces around the table, such as bar stools, dining chairs, and sofas, make certain that they are all sized to similar heights. You don't want some guests to look like dwarfs, while others are stuck towering over the table.
